AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript And XML. Essentially AJAX allows JavaScript to send or receive data via PHP requests in the background. Keep in mind that using AJAX will use a significant amount of bandwidth on your web server, and should be limited.

AJAX allows applications to save data without actually reloading the web browser.  Google utilized AJAX to automatically save your work when using Google Docs.
